What the County Auditor Does — and Why It Matters

The County Auditor is one of the most important elected offices at the local level. In Grant County (and across Washington State), the Auditor’s Office has a wide-ranging portfolio that includes

Core Responsibilities

  • Elections & Voter Registration:
The Auditor oversees all county elections and maintains voter registration records, ensuring every eligible resident can participate in the democratic process.

  • Public Records & Property Documents:
The Auditor records and maintains deeds, liens, plats, and other official documents that are part of the public record, providing legal transparency and certainty for property ownership.

  • County Financial Oversight:
The Auditor audits claims and records county financial transactions to help ensure public funds are managed responsibly and transparently.

  • Licensing Services:
The Auditor issues vehicle titles and registrations, vessel registrations, and certain other licenses on behalf of the state, providing essential services to residents.

  • Collaboration with County Officials:
The Auditor works alongside the County Treasurer, Board of Commissioners, and other elected officials to maintain oversight and accountability across county operations.

WHY THE AUDITOR ROLE MATTERS TO RESIDENTS

  • Transparency & Public Trust: Ensures government operations remain open and accountable.

  • Safeguarding Democracy: Oversees fair and accurate elections and voter registration.

  • Secure Property & Public Records: Provides legal certainty for property owners.

  • Fiscal Responsibility: Ensures public funds are spent responsibly.

Why the Auditor Role Matters to Businesses

While the Grant County Auditor is an elected government official, the office directly impacts businesses through essential services and public transparency:

  • Property Records: Maintaining accurate deeds, liens, and plats ensures businesses can buy, sell, and lease property with confidence.

  • Licensing Services: Vehicle, vessel, and certain business-related licenses are issued efficiently and lawfully, keeping operations compliant.

  • Financial Oversight: Transparent auditing of county finances protects the integrity of the local economy and public funds that businesses rely on indirectly.

  • Election & Voting Records: Accurate records support fair and accountable local governance, which affects policies and regulations important to the business community.
